In a typically bizarre burst of ambition, Dubai have announced plans to build a £621m replica of the Taj Mahal, reports the BBC
It will form part of a Taj Arabia complex, called ‘New City of Love’ and will include a 300-room hotel, shops and commercial buildings, says the developer.
Planned for 2014, the complex will also house other structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids and the Great Wall of China.
An earlier plan to build the complex was shelved due to the global economic downturn, and was one of many high profile projects to have fallen by the wayside. A Karl Lagerfeld-designed fashion island was put on hold, and plans to convert the QE2 into a luxury hotel have also been postponed indefinitely.
Perhaps the Taj Arabia will have better luck this time. Developers say they hope that the Taj Arabia will attract couples and become a new wedding destination.
