A New Zealand man had to get an eel removed from his rectum this week in hospital

Apparently he rocked up at Auckland City Hospital’s A&E to explain the rather unusual problem.

After some tests it was confirmed that there was in fact an eel lodged in his bottom. A member of Auckland City Hospital accounted: "The eel was about the size of a decent sprig of asparagus and the incident is the talk of the place," reported the New Zealand Herald. "Doctors and nurses have come across people with strange objects that have got stuck where they shouldn't be before, but an eel has to be a first."

The man was later discharged after staff had removed the creature from his bum. In New Zealand there are two well known types of eel species - the shortfin and the longfin. It’s thought that the man had one of these inside him.

It is still unconfirmed as to how the eel managed to find its way into the man’s bottom.
