New Zealand set to change notorious road rule

The rule, which only exists in New Zealand, has been accused of causing hold ups on fast moving roads.

Clive Matthew Wilson editor of a motoring website, told the Telegraph the rules were “universally despised”.

“I’ve had several near accidents with foreigners who were unaware the rule even existed,” he said.

The law which was brought in 35 years ago was designed to allow motorists moving across a lane of traffic right of way, and was almost adopted by the Aussie state of Victoria.

A survey suggested 77% of drivers would be happy to see the back of the rule, which will officially be changed from 5am this Sunday.
