James Arthur was voted winner of the X Factor 2012 last night and will release the single Impossible, a cover of Shontelle 2010.

Arthur, 24, was surprised at the news that he had got more votes than Jahmene Douglas.

“Thank you, thank you so much. Have I really won? Wow. I don't know what to say,” said Arthur.

Douglas said: “It's such a blessing to even share a stage with such a talent, he's my idol.”

It was apparent that Arthur and Jahmane had developed a close bond, as they hugged as the votes were announced. Arthur got 54 per cent of the votes and was given his winner’s single.

Profits from the single will go to children’s charity Together For Short Lives.

“I'm so pleased it's going to a good cause,” said Arthur, “thank you so much to everyone who voted for me - I'm so thankful.”
