Cape York & The Far North

Q. I really want to get up to Cape York in the far north. How easy is it to do and what’s the best way of getting up there?
Kristina Larsson, via email
A. Cape York is easily reached nowadays in a plane or boat, but the best and most adventurous way is undoubtedly by 4WD, whether on your own or as part of a tour. You’ll get a better feel of the peninsula’s changing landscapes and bush characters, and a greater sense of achievement when you finally stand on Australia’s northern-most tip.
The peninsula itself is an enormous frontier wilderness, with just 18,000 people and a similar number of crocs.
Go on your own (or in convoy with others) and you’ll need a reliable 4WD, mechanical know-how and enough fuel, food and water to last a few days. All roads past Cooktown are unsealed and most rivers are crossed on barges run by local indigenous communities.
Most tours operate out of Cairns, generally lasting from six to 14 days with up to 12 people. Differing transport combinations are offered, with many doing the return trip by air.
